5 more cases filed against Hasina, aides

Five more cases, including two on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, two on murder charges and one on attempt to murder, were filed against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides.

The new cases took to at least 115, the number of cases filed against Hasina since August 5, when she resigned and fled to India in the face of a student-led mass uprising.

Two new cases of genocide and crimes against humanity were filed on Wednesday with the International Crimes Tribunal against Hasina and several of her associates, including former cabinet members, party colleagues, and police officials, in connection with the killing of six individuals in police firing at Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, on August 5.

One case was filed by Rizwanul Islam, accusing Hasina and 29 of her associates of killing five people, including his brother As Sabur in Ashulia.

The second case, filed by Shahina Begum accusing Hasina and 39 others of killing her son, Sazzad Hossain, who was among those gathered to celebrate the fall of the Hasina government on August 5.

Both the cases target the same group of individuals, bringing the total number of cases filed with the ICT to 15.

Apart from Hasina, the other accused included her adviser Salman Rahman, former ministers Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former Dhaka district superintendent of police Maruf Hossain, additional SP Abdullah Al Kafi, along with local AL leaders and police officials in the area.

The families of the victims alleged that the killings were premeditated and carried out by on-duty police officers and local AL leaders, acting under direct orders from Hasina, her cabinet members, and senior police officials.

They claimed the victims were picked up, killed, and then disposed of by being buried or dumped from police vans in front of the Ashulia police station.

Legal assistance for the families has been provided by lawyer Huzzatul Islam Khan.

One of the two new murder cases was filed with the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury against 46 people including Hasina, former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan and former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam.

Victim’s father Tofazzal Hossain filed the case over the killing of his son Salam Babu, an auto rickshaw driver in Uttara area on July 22.

The court later directed the Uttara East police station to accept the complaint as a first information report.

A person named Mamun filed a case accusing Hasina and 26 others, with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan over the killing of Selim Ali Sheikh in the Mirpur area on July 19.

The court asked Mirpur model police station to file the matter as an FIR.

Another case was filed against 27 people, including Hasina, on the charge of attempting to murder a lawyer in front of the Supreme Court in 2013, Bangladesh Sangabad Sanstha reported.

Victim Rehena Pervin, a lawyer, filed the complaint with the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Arobia Khanom on Wednesday.

The court later asked the Shahbagh police station to file the matter as an FIR.

According to the case statement, the accused attacked when around 300 lawyers were protesting in front of the Supreme Court on 29 December, 2013, demanding reinstatement of the caretaker government system.

Meanwhile, an attempt to murder case was filed against former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and nine others for attacking a supreme court lawyer and human rights activist Golam Mohammad Rabbani alias Nayon Bangalee near the Matsya Bhaban area about 11 years back.

Begum Meherunnesa Haque, mother of Nayon Bangalee and member of the national executive committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party filed a petition with Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Arobia Khanom, BSS reported.

The court, after hearing the statement of the complainant, instructed the Shahabagh police to file the matter as a FIR.

Suspended Juba League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat, Bhola-3 lawmaker Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shayon, former DB chiefs Krishna Pada Ray and Syed Bazlul Karim, former joint commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Biplob Kumar Sarkar were also accused in the case.

The victim sustained serious injuries during the attack, the FIR said, adding that the victim is now undergoing treatment abroad.
