5 killed in Tangail road accident

At least five people were killed including an air force member and a bank official while eight others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Bangabandhu Bridge highway at Mirzapur in Tangail early Sunday.
Officer-in-charge of Mirzapur police station, Nazmul Haque Bhuiyan, said the accident took place at Charpara bypass of Postokamuri area around 5:30am.
A speedy Dhaka-bound bus of Dipjal Paribahan that had started from Naogaon rammed a truck laden with potatoes.
The truck was parked on the shoulder of the road.
The impact of the clash left five of the bus riders dead on the spot, he said.
Eight injured persons were admitted to Mirzapur Kumudini Medical College and Hospital.
The bodies were sent to Tangail Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
The victims were – Sergeant Ashraful Islam, 36, hailed from Gaibandha, Atwar Rahman, 50, hailed from Jaipurhat, Anisur Rahman, 52, and Abdul Kuddus, 28, of Naogaon, and Zamir Ali, 35, of Savar in Dhaka.
Sergeant Ashraful Islam was working with the Bangladesh Air Force and that Atwar Rahman was an official of Bangladesh Bank, stationed in Bogra.
The driver and other staff of the bus fled.
Some riders of the bus alleged that the driver fell asleep and that he was driving rough.
Many said that particular section of the highway was at engineering fault, that is why, accidents have been a regular event there.
Executive engineer of Tangail roads and highway department, Nur-e-Alam also admitted that that particular spot and adjacent areas are prone to accident.
The spot was not right place for parking a vehicle, he said.
He said the highway will be expanded to four lanes to curb accidents.
Locals said a number of 10 to15 accidents occurred in the last 4 to 6 months at the same place and adjacent areas. Those accidents took some 20 to 25 lives.
