5 injured in BCL factional clash at DU

It was a fight between first-year boys over a trivial matter, says Surja Sen Hall BCL president Mobarak Hossain

Five persons have been injured in a clash between two groups of Chhatra League activists in Surja Sen Hall of Dhaka University on Friday afternoon.

The clash erupted following an altercation between two first-year students of the hall who belong to two factions of the ruling party student affiliate while they were having lunch in the Jashim Uddin Hall cafeteria.

Tension spread among the supporters Surja Sen Hall BCL president Mobarak Hossain and secretary Arefin Siddique Sujan following the altercation which turned into a clash around 3pm, witnesses said.

Witnesses said they heard sound of two blank shots while the clash was on.

On information, police and Dhaka University unit BCL leaders including its president Mehedi Hasan and secretary Omar Sharif rushed to the scene.

Later, police was preparing a raid into the hall, till the last update arrived.

Injured Belal Hossain, Nahid, Shahzad, Monir and Abu Sayeed were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Mobarak, president of Surja Sen Hall unit Chhatra League however denied any occurrence of shooting in the hall.

He said it was a fight between first year boys over a trivial matter.

Omar Sharif, secretary of Dhaka University Chhatra League unit, also remarked the fight as “nothing big” and was “taking care of the matter” by mitigating among the people who clashed each other.
