Ruling Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif has declined to comment on former ministr Abdul Halim not getting capital punishment.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday sentenced Abdul Alim to life imprisonment until death for his atrocities during 1971 liberation war.
In his instant reaction Hanif said that people had expected capital punishment. “However, we are respectful of the verdict.”
The court had found the former Muslim League leader guilty of committing large-scale killings and other war crimes but it ordered life in prison until death considering his physical condition.
Hanif declined to make any comment on that.
“Nine allegations have been proven against him. This is proved that he was anti-liberation and a war criminal. For that the people expected capital punishment for him.”
The 83-year old former Muslim League leader who went on to serve Ziaur Rahman as a minister is the second BNP leader to be convicted and the third former minister to be found guilty of crimes committed to stop Bangladesh emerge as a sovereign nation.
