At least 40 people were injured as a train derailed in Brahmanpara upazila on Sunday evening due to the removal of fishplates from the rail tracks allegedly by blockaders.
Hamidul Haque, assistant executive engineer of Comilla Railway Station, said the locomotive and four bogies of the Dhaka-bound ‘Mahanagar Godhuli Express’ train veered off the tracks in between Rajapur and Shasidal railway stations around 7:45pm after the miscreants uprooted the fish plates.
The accident also snapped the train communications on Chittagong-Dhaka and Chittagong-Sylhet routes, he said.
Two relief trains -– one from Laksam and the other from Akhaura — rushed to the spot to salvage the derailed engine and the bogies.
Meanwhile, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot after the accident.
He also ordered suspension of officer-in-charge of Laksma Government Railway Police Station M Shahidullah for dereliction of duty.
