Four ready-made garment factories have been closed indefinitely amidst protests from workers demanding wage hike and other facilities.
Meddler Apparels locked out on Wednesday morning while Sharmin Groups three factories–Sharmin Apparels, Sharmin Fashions and Sharaf Apparels – closed down on the previous night.
Closure notices were put up on gates of the respective factories.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, four factories declared holiday. Meddler Apparels was one among them.
Police and locals said workers took to the streets blocking Dhaka-Tangail highway for the third consecutive day on Wednesday morning and damaged around five vehicles in the area.
Law enforcers lobbed teargas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse them.
Some 12 factories were announced close for the day.
Ashulia Police Station Officer in-Charge Badrul Alam told bdnews24.com that “terrorists” had attacked three Sharmin Group units in the night. Those units were closed in the night.
Authorities filed a lawsuit against 93 named and many anonymous others over the incident, he said.
In the morning workers of the unit after seeing their factories closed down, joined other protestors demanding wage hike, the OC said.
Industrial Police Deputy Assistant Diretor Abdus Sattar said that Meddler Fashions was closed down due to unrelenting workers unrest in the area.
He confirmed that 12 factories declared holiday on Wednesday due to the unrest.
Delwar Hossain, Deputy General Manager of Ha-Meem Group, said workers of his factory abandoned work and joined protests. “The day was then declared holiday.”
