Four suspected criminals were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Meherpur Sadar upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Saddam Hossain, 25, Ramesh, 24, Sohag, 27, and Kanon, 25, of Sonapur village in the upazila.
Abdullah Al Mahmud, additional superintendent of Meherpur police, said a team of police chased a gang of criminals at Nurpur intersection around 2:30am.
At one stage, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight, which left the four dead on the spot.
Meanwhile, six policemen, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ahsan Habib, were injured in the incident.
Police suspected that the four criminals are accused in a case filed in connection with a double murder at Sonapur village.
