4 arrested over attack on Hindu community in Sunamganj

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the attack and vandalism targeting houses, shops, and a temple belonging to the Hindu community in Dowarabazar upazila of Sunamganj.

According to a statement from the Police Headquarters shared by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing on Saturday, the arrested individuals are Alim Hossain, 19, Sultan Ahmed Raju, 20, Imran Hossain, 31, and Shahjahan Hossain, 20.

On December 3, a young man named Akash Das, 20, from Monglargaon village under Dowarabazar Police Station made a derogatory post on Facebook criticising Islam.

Although the post was deleted, screenshots of it circulated, sparking tension among locals.

Upon receiving the information, Dowarabazar police detained Akash Das on the same day.

However, a group of people attempted to snatch him from police custody.

For safety reasons, Akash was transferred to the Sadar Police Station instead of being kept in Dowarabazar.

On the same day, enraged locals attacked and vandalized homes, shops, and the Loknath Temple belonging to the Hindu community.

The situation was brought under control with the intervention of the Superintendent of Police (SP), the District Commissioner (DC), and personnel from the army and police.

Police have stated that they are conducting an in-depth investigation to identify those involved in the incident.

Following the investigation, a case has been filed against 12 named suspects and 150–170 unidentified individuals for their alleged involvement.
