3 Inqilab journos get bail

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Salam passes the order

A Dhaka court has granted bail to three journalists of the Bangla daily Inqilab in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Salam passed the order on Thursday afternoon on Tk10, 000 bond, responding to a bail plea filed by Syed Ahmed Gazi, the lawyer of the detained journalists.

The journalists are Inqilab’s News Editor Rabiulla Ulla Robi, Deputy Chief Reporter Rafiq Mohammad and Diplomatic Correspondent Ahmed Atik.

The three journalists were detained on January 16 for producing “fabricated” news regarding the presence of the Indian military inside Bangladeshi territory and the newspaper’s press was sealed off. Later, the daily apologised for producing the report.

On January 20, a Dhaka court granted police a two-day remand for questioning Atiq on why and on what grounds he had prepared a fabricated news report, and who else were involved with it.

On January 29, Atiq gave his confessional statement before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-Or-Rashid.
The court recorded his statement and sent him to jail rejecting his bail plea.

Earlier, another Dhaka court rejected the bail pleas for News Editor Rabiulla Ulla Robi and Deputy Chief Reporter Rafiq Mohammad and sent them to prison.
