2,66,118 loan defaulters in country: Finance minister
There are 2, 66, 118 loan defaulters in the country as of December 2018, Finance Minister AHM Mostafa Kamal informed parliament today.
In reply to a query of ruling Awami League MP Waresat Hossain Belal, the minister also placed the list of top 20 loan defaulters in the House.
They are: Quantam Power System Ltd, Samanaj Super Oil Ltd, BR Shipping Mills Ltd, Suprovo Shipping Ltd, Remex Footwear Ltd, Rising Steel Ltd, Computer Source Ltd, Bentex Industries Ltd, Max Shipping Mills, SA Oil Refinery Ltd, Rubaiya Vegetable Oil Industries Ltd, Anowara Shipping Mills, Crescent Leather Products Ltd, Suprovo Rotor Shipping Ltd, Yasir Enterprise, Chowdhury Knitwear Ltd, Siddique Traders, Rupali Composite Leatherwear Ltd, Alfa Composite Towels Ltd and MM Vegetable Products Ltd.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury chaired the question-answer session in the parliament today.
In a reply to a query of AL MP Haji Selim, the finance minister told the House that the amount of total loan default in the six state-run banks stood at Tk 44, 289 crore as of September 2018.
The minister in his reply also said apart from the government, Bangladesh Bank has also taken various measures to recover the default loans.
He said a high-level committee has been formed comprising of officials of Bangladesh Bank and concerned ministries for reviewing and bringing an amendment to the existing laws in a bid to recover the default loans.
In reply to a query of AL MP Israfil Alam, the finance minister said, Sonali Bank, Janata Bank, Agrani Bank, Rupali Bank and Investment Corporation of Bangladesh has supplied Tk 715 to Farmers Bank (presently renamed as Padma Bank) to regain depositor’s confidence.
