A total of 20 people were killed in separate traffic accidents at Noakhali, Narayanganj, Bhola, Faridpur and Chittagong in the early hours today.
Six people, including three of a family, died after a bus plunged into a roadside canal near the Joyag College in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali around 4:00am.
The Ramganj-bound bus was coming from Chittagong.
The deceased were identified as Shirin Akhtar, 28, resident of village Joydevpur of Ramganj upazila, her son Shahed, 12, and daughter Kohinur, Md Khokan, 35, resident of village Kutubpur of Begumganj upazila, and Nurul Haque, 45, of village Chilka of Ramganj.
Sonaimuri police officer-in-charge Abdus Samad could not confirm identity of the other victim.
In Narayanganj, four people were killed as a car fell in a ditch beside Dhaka-Narayanganj Highway at Jalkuri in Narayanganj at dawn today.
The deceased are Sumon, Pintu, Salam and Abdullah.
Siddhirganj police officer-in-charge Anisur Rahman said the bodies of the passengers of the black car have been sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
In Bhola, a bus veered off the Bhola-Charfasson road leaving 3 passengers killed and 12 injured around 6:30am.
The deceased are Salahuddin and Helal, residents of Aslampur of Charfasson upazila. The other one could not be identified, said Charfasson police officer-in-charge Abul Bashar.
The injured have been admitted to Charfasson and Lalmohan upazila health complexes.
Four passengers were killed when a microbus hit a tree at Maligram in Chandra Union of Bhanga upazila around 8:00am today.
Two of the deceased are Al Amin, 22, a resident of Moqsudpur, and Md Tariqul, resident of Faridpur sadar upazila. Rest of them could not be identified.
Bhanga Highway Police assistant sub-inspector Abdullah said another passenger was killed in a same kind of accident when a microbus hit a roadside tree on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway at Chumurdi union at 9:00am.
The victim is Md Zahidul, 28, a resident of Madaripur sadar upazila.
Two motorbike riders were killed at Shitalpur Bagulabazar of Chittagong’s Shitakunda upazila as a bus hit them from behind.
The deceased, Md Nurul Kabir and Md Razu, are residents of Chittagong city’s North Kattali.
Barowalia Highway police sub-inspector Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident saying that a bus of Tisha Paribahan hit them at Bagulabazar on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway killing the duo on the spot.
Local people captured the bus and handed it over to the police while the bodies have been sent for autopsy.
