Two students have died after a car, hit by a bus from behind, ran them over in Munshiganj’s Sreenagar Upazila.
Agitated locals blocked the road for half of an hour after the accident on the Dhaka-Mawa Highway, leading to severe traffic gridlock.
The incident took place at the Upazila’s Kewatkhali Bus Stand on Sunday evening, locals and police said.
Hasara highway police outpost’s Sergeant Md Hasan told reporters that the private car had lost control and ran over some people standing beside the road after the Ilish Paribahan bus rammed it from behind.
Both seventh grade students of Hasara Kali Kishore High School, ‘Shubho’, 12, and ‘Sourav’, 13, were among the six people who were injured.
The other four injured include their friend ‘Tariqul’, 13, and the car’s driver.
All victims were rushed to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex at first. Five of them, including Shubho and Sourav, were then transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
But the two died on the way, police said.
Shubho and Sourav were cousins, who lived at Kewatkhali, said their relatives .
The two were on their way home when the accident happened, family members said.
Sergeant Hasan said traffic on the highway came to a halt as residents of the area demonstrated by blockading the road.
The situation, however, returned to normal after about 30 minutes but the tailback was yet to be cleared, he added.
He said they impounded the car and the bus but the bus driver fled the scene.
