Two people have been shot dead after a group of extortionists opened fire while reportedly snatched money from the leaseholder of a cattle market in Chittagong’s Sandwip Upazila.
Sandwip Municipality Mayor Jafar Ullah Titu has identified the dead as Md Jahangir, 48, and Md Kabir, 35.
The shooting took place at the cattle market near Baten market at the island Upazila around 4:30pm on Monday, witnesses and police said.
Chittagong’s Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Mostafizur Rahman also confirmed bdnews24.com that two men were killed when a group of miscreants started shooting while raiding the cattle market.
Witnesses said the miscreants attempted to rob the leaseholder who had collected the money charged for each purchase of cattle in the market (locally called the Hasil money).
Many were shot when the attackers opened fire on facing resistance, they added.
Jafar Ullah told bdnews24.com a man named ‘Muktar’ got the market’s lease from the municipality by bidding Tk 200,000 several months ago.
“He (Muktar) told me that the miscreants attacked him in the afternoon first and then demanded that he handed over the collected Hasil money. He said they snatched the money from him after shooting at them randomly,” the municipality mayor said.
