Two Pakistani nationals have been arrested with 1.71 crore of fake Indian Rupees and huge cigarettes at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday morning.

The detained Pakistani nationals, including a young girl, were identified as Abu Zahir, 50, and Yiasmin, 18.

Moinul Khan, Director General of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has told the Dhaka Tribune.

“The Pakistani nationals arrived at Dhaka at around 2pm on a flight of the Pakistan Airlines,” he said.

Asked, the CIID official said acting on a tip-off, the Pakistani nationals were arrested and 1.71 crore of fake Indian currencies and 195 cartons of easy cigarettes were seized from their possessions.

“Residents of Karachi, the duo have come to Dhaka on tourist visa,” he said, adding: “Interrogations had been on to know about their destinations and their cohorts in Bangladesh.”

Moreover, earlier in the morning, the CIID officials recovered 413 cartons of cigarettes and huge medicines at an abandoned state.

CIID Director General Moinul Khan said the medicines made in Switzerland and cigarettes had been smuggled into the country from Dubai.

“Acting on a tip-off, the cigarettes and medicines were found at an abandoned state at the Customs Hall,” he said.

“Since the medicines and cigarettes were recovered at abandoned state, none was arrested in this connection.”

Asked, he said perhaps the smuggler left away the medicines and cigarettes to avert arrest.
