Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has reinstated 18 of the officers of RAB-3 after they were ‘withdrawn’ from their posts following allegations that they embezzled seized money.
The force on Tuesday confirmed reinstatement of the members, including the battalion’s Crime Prevention Company (CPC)-3 Commander Major Ali Ahsan.
They were taken off duty over allegation of money embezzlement, said a report published on Monday on ‘DMP News’, operated by Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
RAB, however, said the officials were attached to RAB headquarters, not withdrawn from duty.
After RAB reacted sharply to the report, it was removed from the DMP News website.
RAB spokesperson ATM Habibur Rahman Tuesday told bdnews24.com: “Officers of RAB-3 who were attached to RAB headquarters have been reinstated to their own unit today.”
“This is a regular drill. There is no other way to look at it,” he said.
Rahman, however, said they would look into the embezzlement allegations against the 18 officers.
The report published on DMP News said that CPC-3 members embezzled Tk 90,000 from Tk 150,000 million seized from four arrestees on Friday. The four men are from Comilla.
It said though the RAB members seized Tk 0.15 million, they showed only Tk 60,000 in the seizure list and embezzled the remainder.
RAB headquarters found the allegations made by the families of the arrestees genuine and ordered their withdrawal.
But Habibur Rahman on Monday told bdnews24.com that they were only attached to the headquarters, not taken off duty.
In a letter to the police same day, he described the news as ‘motivated and false’.
Afterwards, the DMP in a clarification said the report was removed as it was inconsistent with the policy of its news portal.
