The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday announced 15-member squads for the men’s and women’s cricket event in the 17th Asian Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea next month. Although the captain of the men’s side was yet to be named, it was learned that veteran paceman Mashrafe bin Mortaza is the favourite to lead Bangladesh in their pursuit of the title-defence.
Chief selector Faruk Ahmed earlier informed that defending champions Bangladesh will send the strongest possible squad for the Asiad and he stayed true to his word as several national cricketers were selected including openers Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque along with all-rounder Mahmudullah and middle-order batsman Nasir Hossain. “We have tried to pick the best and strongest possible side for the Asian Games and it was also the board’s policy to retain the gold. Apart from Shakib [al Hasan] who is suspended and captain Mushfiqur [Rahim] who will get married, we have chosen our best players,” said Faruk.
Middle-order batsman Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny were selected in the squad alongside all-rounder Muktar Ali. Youngster Sabbir Rahman will also be featuring in the tournament that Bangladesh had won four years ago in Guangzhou defeating Afghanistan in the final. Mohammad Ashraful was the skipper of the side.
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, China, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives and South Korea are the 10 teams that will participate in the cricket competition.
