126 candidates lost security money

 

As many as 126 candidates out of 369 in the 139 constituencies lost their security money as they failed to bag at least one-eighths of the casting votes during the Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

 

The statistics were found analysing the unofficial election results of the constituencies that was disclosed by the Election Commission.

 

The candidates of 11 political parties out of 12 lost the security money in the January-5 general election. But no candidate of ruling Awami League lost the security money.

 

All the candidates of four participating parties lost Tk 20,000 security money deposited by candidates during the submission of nomination papers.

 

A total of 390 candidates ran the electoral race in the 147 constituencies where the voting was held on Sunday. Of the constituencies, the final election result of eight parliamentary seats could not be announced as re-voting in 392 polling stations will be held on January 16 there.

 

In the 10th parliamentary elections, the 153 constituencies out of 300 went uncontested after getting single candidates.

 

The 126 candidates whose security money will be forfeited are 25 from Jatiya Party, eight from Workers Party, 13 from Jasad, 22 from Monzu-led JP, 12 from BNF, six National Awami Party candidates, one Tarikat Federation candidate, two Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish candidates, one Ganotantri Party candidate, one Ganofront candidate, one Bangladesh Islami Front candidate, and 34 independent candidates.

 

In the 147 constituencies, there were 120 contesting candidates of Awami League, while 66 of HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party, 27 of Jatiya Party-JP, 22 of the newly-floated BNF, 21 of Jasad, 16 of Workers’ Party, six of Bangladesh National Awami Party, three of Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, two of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, one of each Ganotantri Party, Ganofront and Bangladesh Islami Front, and 104 independent candidates.

 

Out of 40 registered political parties, 12 contested the election which was boycotted by the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance.

 

All candidates of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Ganotantri Party, Bangladesh Islamic Front and Ganofront lost the security money.
