A search is on to trace 12 missing passengers of a boat that capsized in the Padma River in Kushtia’s Daulatpur on Tuesday.
Divers say they have searched for hours but could neither locate the boat nor any of those missing.
The motorised fishing boat was carrying at least 22 Eid holidaymakers to an island from Bairagir Char when it capsized due to strong currents and rough winds.
Locals rescued six people shortly afterwards.
On Tuesday, the local administration said at least 15 people had been missing but revised the number to 12 on Wednesday.
The missing have been identified as — ‘Shondha’, 4, ‘Subarna’, 6, ‘Tinni’, 7, ‘Bithi’, 10, ‘Keyamoni’, 10, ‘Swapan’, 20, ‘Bibha’, 22, ‘Shipon’, 26, ‘Jamal’, 26, his wife ‘Sumi’, 20, ‘Shahajul’, 28, and ‘Kalu’, 32.
Daulatpur police said they hail from the Upazila’s Farakpur and Gangarampur villages.
Relatives of those still missing have thronged the river bank; many of them were seen sobbing, while waiting impatiently for news of their loved ones.
