12 killed in road accidents

At least 12 people including a freedom fighter were killed while 29 others in separate road accidents in Bandarban, Tangail, Comilla and Savar on Thursday.
In Bandarban, seven workers were killed while eight others injured when a truck carrying equipment of mobile phone operator GrameenPhone overturned and fell into a roadside ditch on Chakaria-Lama road in Lama.
The accident took place at Yangsa around 7:30am when the trucker lost control over steering, said Amir Hossain, mayor of Lama municipality.
It overturned fell into the roadside ditch and all the equipment crumbled on the workers leaving four of them dead on the spot and 11 others injured, he said.
Three of them succumbed to their injuries at Chakaria Upazila Health Complex in Cox’s Bazar, the mayor added.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals in Cox’s Bazar.
The victims were Razib, 40, Rabin, 35, Aftab Hossain, 55, Amzad Hossain, 45, Alek Rahman, and Md Aziz from Ishwardi of Pabna, and Md Hasan Ali from Satkhira.
The truck driver fled the scene immediate after the accident, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Lama police station.
In Tangail, two people including a freedom fighter were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on Dhaka-Bangabandhu Bridge highway in Kalihati.
The victims were Ishwardi upazila commander of freedom fighters in Pabna, Azizul Haque, 70, and Saidul Islam of Daulatpur in Kushtia.
Bangabandhu Bridge east police officer-in-charge Md Akheruzzaman said the accident took place at Soratoil around 10:30am when a Kushtia-bound bus of Rajdhani Paribahan hit the truck leaving the duo dead on the spot.
The injured were sent to Tangail Medical College Hospital, he said.
United News of Bangladesh adds: In Savar, a labourer was killed and 10 others were injured in another head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Kalma number two bus stand area.
The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 40, a resident of Kalma Aukpara Adarsha village, reports.
Witnesses said a bus with some day labourers on board collided with a sand-laden truck coming from the opposite direction around 7:30am leaving one of the labourers dead on the spot and 10 others injured.
Of the injured, six people were admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-charge of Savar police station Kamruzzaman confirmed the incident.
In Comilla, two people were killed and another injured as a bus hit a Compressed Natural Gas-run auto-rickshaw in Borokanta area of Debidwar upazila.
Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Mainamati highway police officer-in-charge Abdul Awal said the accident took place on Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 7:00am when a Chittagong-bound bus of Unique Paribahan hit the auto-rickshaw leaving two people dead on the spot and the auto-rickshaw driver injured.
The injured was admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
