Around 1,000 bullets and two grenades, believed to be hidden during the Liberation War in 1971, were found during earth piling in the city’s Halishahar area on Thursday afternoon.
Officer-in-charge of Halishahar Police Station Shahjahan Kabir said workers found a sack while piling earth for constructing a building on a plot at Road-16 of Block-B of Halishahar Residential Area in the afternoon.
The workers found the sack full of bullets after they opened it. Later, they informed police of the incident.
On information, police rushed in and recovered the ammunition, two grenades, one rifle barrel and a magazine around 5:30pm, the OC said.
The recovered bullets include 770 of .303 rifles, 80 of revolver and 30 of 9mm submachine carbine.
Mohammad Nasir Uddin, a US expatriate, bought the land in 2005 and recently started constructing a building on it.
