10 missing in sea as they jump off trawler

At least 10 people went missing as they jumped into the sea off a trawler in Sandwhip upazila on Thursday for fear of vessel capsize.

 

Five of the missing people are Jahid Chowdhury Bhutto of Sandwip Poura area, Rasheda Begum, her two daughters – Pinki, 5, and Liza, 7, of Mogdhara, and Shamsul Alam of Mikebhanga.

 

Fish trader Nasir who was rescued in the accident said the Guptachhara-bound trawler from Kumira in Sitakunda with 60-70 passengers on board started tilting after it went out of order due to technical glitch.

 

At one stage, some passengers jumped off the vessel for fear that the trawler would sink.

 

Three speedboats rescued some of the passengers from the sea while at least 10 remained missing.

 

Giasuddin, officer-in-charge of Sandwip Police Station, said the family members of five victims lodged complaints with the police station in this connection.

 

Police arrested Maksudur Rahman, manager of Kumira Ghat, in this regard.
