The United States wants a free, fair, credible and acceptable election in Bangladesh to ensure the continuation of its progress in the coming days.
It also wants to see a stronger base of democracy and stable situation in the country through holding an election which needs to be acceptable to all.
BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury said this quoting US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal after nearly a 90-minute meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office in the city on Sunday night.
He said Biswal highly appreciated the speech of Khaleda Zia she delivered on October 21 terming it ‘path-showing’ speech with a future outline to strengthen democracy here further.
At the meeting, Khaleda shared her party’s position regarding the polls-time government to oversee the next election.
She said the people of the country do not want the next election to be held under a partisan government as they believe a credible election is not possible under such administration.
“People want election under non-party and neutral government. It’s people desire. If mass people’s demand is not respected, they’ll vent their natural reaction,” Khaleda was quoted as saying.
The BNP chief also said her party is looking for a solution through discussion which will be acceptable to all so that a fair election can take place in the country.
Shamsher Mobin said the BNP chairperson mentioned that the ruling party will have to come forward to make that happen.
Responding to a question, Shamsher Mobin said she (Biswal) did not come to put any pressure or give any suggestion.
He also said Biswal took note when Khaleda Zia talked about a non-party neutral government.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP chairperson’s advisers Sabihuddin Ahmed and Reaz Rahman, and BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, US Ambassador in Dhaka Dan Mozena were, among others, present.
