A Tk 1100-crore compensation suit was filed on Monday against seven people, including Jamuna Group chairman Nurul Islam Babul, on charge of publishing ‘false’ reports in his newspaper the Daily Jugantor against East-West Properties Development Ltd.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, chairman of Bashundhara Group, the mother organ of East West Property Development Ltd, filed the case with the First Joint District Judge Court of Dhaka.

The other accused in the case include Jugantor publisher and Babul’s wife Salma Islam, couple’s son Shamim Islam, Jugantor acting editor Saiful Alam, Jamuna Print, the Daily Jugantor and Jamuna Future Park.

The court fixed March 31 for submitting reports for issuing summons against the accused.

According to the case statements, the vernacular daily published two reports on October 28 and 29 last year against the Bashundhara’s arm which were ‘false, baseless and confusing’.

The complainant told the court that the reports tarnished his image to the country’s people as well as the civil society members.

On February 9, senior deputy managing director of Bashundhara Group M Belayet Hossain filed a defamation case against five people, including Babul and Salma, on the same charge.
