Target is power: Ershad

Former military dictator and Jatiya Party president HM Ershad on Monday said he is going to contest the polls under the just-formed election-time cabinet to win the race not to sit in the opposition bench.

“I’m going to take part in the election, not to be in the opposition but to go to power,” he told reporters at Bangabhaban.

The Jatiya Party chief came up with the remarks after attending the oath-taking ceremony of six ministers and two state ministers of election-time government as the journalists asked him whether he is joining the polls to be the opposition leader.

He called upon the main opposition to participate in the cabinet and place their demand to the government to end violence and have a solution to the ongoing political crisis.

“The country can’t be run in this way. I want all the political parties to join the cabinet. I want to tell BNP to come up with their demand joining the cabinet,” he added.

The six new ministers are Awami League advisory council members Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, president of Workers Party of Bangladesh Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Party general secretary Ruhul Amin Howlader, presidium members Rowshan Ershad and Anisul Islam Mahmud.

The two state ministers are Jatiya Party leaders Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Salma Islam.
