Religious Affairs Minister Matior Rahaman announced the decision on Wednesday evening after a meeting with the National Moon Sighting committee.

All eyes were set at the heavens to sight the Ramadan crescent, anxiously waiting for the announcement of advent of the holy month.

Ramadan, the month of spiritual reflection and fortitude, culminates with Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest Muslim festival.

The moon was not seen from anywhere in the country, which means fasting will begin on Friday, he told reporters after emerging out of the Islamic Foundation’s meeting hall at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Tarabih prayers will follow ‘Isha’ prayers on Thursday night.

The time to have the year’s first ‘Sahri’ in Dhaka and surrounding places will end on 3:38am Friday, with ‘Iftar’ time at 6:52pm.

The 30th day of the Shaban month, of Hijri year 1436, is set to end on June 18.

Lailatul Qadar, the night when the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad according to Muslims, will, therefore, be commemorated on Jul 14.
