Oppn to stage countrywide demo Saturday

The BNP-led 18-party alliance will stage demonstrations across the country on Saturday protesting the arrest of and torture on the opposition men.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programme at a press briefing at party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office on Wednesday night.

Fakhrul said the opposition alliance will stage demonstrations at district, upazila and thana levels on Saturday, also demanding the release of alliance leaders and activists, including top five BNP leaders.

He alleged that the government is closing the door of dialogue through resorting to inhuman torture on the opposition men.

Turning to the submission of resignation letters by the ministers to the Prime Minister, he said, “We’ve surprisingly noticed that the government has made a joke with the nation over the resignation (of the ministers).”

The BNP leader also said different versions about the dialogue from different quarters of the government are deepening the ongoing crisis.

The BNP spokesperson alleged that when the whole nation is waiting worriedly for talks to resolve the political deadlock, the government has made mockery of them through celebrating ‘Alok Utsab’ at Hatirjheel in the capital on Tuesday.

He said they would announce their next course of action after discussion with the alliance partners.

Later, BNP chief Khaleda Zia, who went to her office after five days, and Fakhrul left the office in separate vehicles around 11:30pm.
