Next election under Sheikh Hasina as per constitution; Hanif

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif on Friday said the next parliamentary election will be held under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as per the Constitution and “all political parties including BNP will join the polls.”

“There is no undemocratic caretaker government system in any constitution of the world,” he told reporters while visiting the river erosion-affected Chilmari and Ramkrishna unions of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia district.

Replying to a query, Hanif said: “Why the Constitution will have to be changed for Mirza Fakhrul or at his dictates? The constitution has been changed to continue the democratic process for which we had been struggling. We will follow the Constitution.”

Accusing BNP of unbridled corruption and plundering of public money while in power, he said people have no confidence in the main opposition BNP. This is why BNP is making undemocratic demands as they fear to go to the election,

“As part of its political strategy, BNP is now waging movement on the election issue to save its leader Khaleda Zia and her two corrupt sons Tarique and Koko from the graft cases,” the AL joint general secretary said.

About river erosion in the two unions of Daulatpur upazila, he said the river erosion has been prevented initially. The Water Resources Ministry has been informed of the matter. The government will take steps for permanent solution to the problem after the visit of a technical team.

Later, Mahbubul Alam Hanif addressed a rally on the premises of erosion-hit Islampur High School. Kushtia district AL general secretary Asgar Ali, Deputy Commissioner Syed Belal Hossain, Police Super Mafiz Uddin Ahmed, and convener of AL Daulatpur upazila unit Sarwar Jahan Badsha were, among others, present.
