Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Moudud Ahmed on Saturday expressed hope that the search committee would recommend names of non-partisan, wise and courageous persons for a neutral Election Commission.
Addressing a roundtable discussion at National Press Club, orgasnised by Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Dal, Moudud made the remarks.
His comments came at a time when senior BNP leaders questioned the neutrality of at least five members of the search committee.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that said they are now all but clear regarding what the search committee would do.
President Abdul Hamid on January 25 formed the six-member search committee, headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, who had led the similar search committee in 2012.
The search committee was formed following the president’s talks with major political parties on the reconstitution of the Election Commission.
The tenure of present Election Commission would expire on February 8.
The search committee also includes Justice Obaidul Hassan of the High Court, comptroller and auditor general of Bangladesh Masud Ahmed, Public Service Commission chairman Muhammed Sadique, Dhaka University English professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, and Chittagong University pro-vice chancellor Shireen Akhter.
The search committee was asked to submit its recommendation to the president in 10 working days.
