Moni dismisses re-poll demand

“Their (BNP) demand is ridiculous. Though there were stray incidents of violence, the Upazila elections were, on the whole, free and fair,” Moni said at a press conference at Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office, in Dhaka, on Wednesday.

Moni, a former foreign minister, said the government would examine whether electronic voting machines (EVM) could lend greater credibility to polling processes.

Asked whether the Upazila polls were fair, she said the media had a free hand in covering the election. “They reported untoward incidents in some areas. But there’s nothing to be worried about.”

She claimed BNP leaders were handing out misinformation to cast doubts on the fairness of the elections.

She said her party and the people had noted with dismay and concern that BNP leaders were taking recourse to mindless falsehood to vitiate the current peaceful political situation and the electoral atmosphere.

She hoped good sense will soon prevail on the BNP leadership.
