MADRASA BLAST CASE Hefajat leader Mufti Izharul arrested in Chittagong of Bangladesh

Detectives yesterday arrested Hefajat-e Islam Nayeb-e-Ameer Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, who was on the run, in Chittagong city in connection with a blast at his madrasa around two years ago.

Izhar was held in an explosive case filed against him with Khulshi Police Station on October 8, 2013, said Kusum Dewan, deputy commissioner (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).

On information, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police of the CMP raided Lalkhan Bazar area around 3:00pm and arrested Izhar in front of  his Al Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa, said the DB official.

On October 7, 2013, a powerful explosion took place in a room of a student dormitory of the madrasa, killing three people.

After the incident, police recovered four homemade grenades and a large amount of bomb-making materials from the madrasa.

The next day, a case was lodged under the Explosive Substances Act with Khulshi Police Station. Izhar and his son Harun Bin Izhar were made the prime accused. Two other cases, including one for murder, were also filed in connection with the blast incident.

On February 10 last year, Mohammad Lokman, sub-inspector of Khulshi Police Station and also investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet in the case.

According to the charge sheet, in primary investigation, it was found that explosives were preserved, made and kept in the madrasa for conducting subversive activities and creating panic among the people.
