HC rejects writ challenging Mahmudur’s remand

The High Court on Sunday rejected the writ petition challenging the legality of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman’s remand.

A joint bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order.
Earlier, Feroza Mahmud, wife of Mahmudur Rahman, filed the writ petition on April 17 challenging the legality of Mahmudur’s remand.
On April 11, plainclothes police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from the daily’s Karwanbazar office.
The following day, he was taken on a 13-day DB police remand for interrogation.
But, he was sent to jail on April 17 as he fell sick during the remand.
The charges brought against Rahman are sedition and unlawful publication of conversations between the ICT judge and an external consultant under sections 56 and 57 of Cyber Crime and ICT Act-2006 and sections 120(b), 124, 124(a), 505 (a) and 511 of the Penal Code.
