The ruling Awami League has nominated acting President and House Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid for presidential polls slated for April 29.

The nomination came at a meeting of Awami League Parliamentary Party (ALPP) at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban Sunday morning.

“The meeting nominated him (Hamid) unanimously,” Whip ASM Feroz told reporters.

According to meeting sources, senior AL leader Tofail Ahmed proposed the ALPP nominated Hamid for the presidential race.

Amir Hossain Amu, another veteran of the party, extended his support, backed by all the participants.

ALPP chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting, which began around 11:10am.

Latest political situation and opposition’s ongoing anti-government movement also came up for discussion during the meeting, the sources added.

A four-member ALPP delegation led by Whip Feroz later collected nomination paper from Election Commission office at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar for Hamid.

Tofail submitted the nomination paper to the EC around 2:00pm.

Hamid became the acting president on March 14 in accordance with the constitution after President Zillur Rahman fell sick and was flown to Singapore for treatment.

The Election Commission moved for the election following the death of Zillur, a veteran politician, on March 20.
