Govt. seeks to boost investment

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said on Monday a key goal of the government for the next five years is to raise investment to speed up economic growth.

“We’ll have to give highest emphasis on raising all kinds of investment from domestic private sector and foreign sources. The slogan for the next five years is ‘investment increase’,” he said.

Muhith’s remarks came at a meeting with the newly-elected office bearers of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) at his secretariat office this afternoon. DCCI president Mohammad Shahjahan Khan led the delegation.

He said the some basic changes will be made in the corporate tax system as it still has some problems.

He said that the government will now focus on macroeconomic stability that it has been maintaining over the last few years.

When his attention was drawn to the lengthy process of attracting foreign loans to help the local businesses, Muhith asked the DCCI delegation to pinpoint the problem either at the Board of Investment (BoI) or at the Bangladesh Bank.

He told another delegation member referring to his previous remarks that the government would consider the possibility of allowing Bangladeshi firms to invest abroad according to merit of the project.

The Finance Minister, however, sought advices from the business leaders of DCCI over the issue of high bank interest rates adding, “I really don’t know how to do it”
