Govt plotting to destroy GB: Fakhrul

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the government of conspiring to destroy the Grameen Bank.

“Immediately after coming to power, the government hatched conspiracy against the bank which has worldwide reputation,” the BNP spokesperson said in press statement on Friday.

He said main aim of the government is to insult Prof Muhammad Yunus, the county’s lone Noble laureate, who played the key role to establish the bank for the last 30 years.

As part of the conspiracy, Fakhrul said the government removed him from the post of the bank’s managing director and now has started the final initiative to ruin the Noble winning institution.

He protested the recent proposal of the Grameen Bank Investigating Commission, a government-backed body.

If the proposal implemented, the BNP leader said, the bank would be destroyed totally that eventually would push the poor people into a big trouble.

He said the government wants to split it into 19 and plans to operate like Palli Bidyut. He said this is nothing but insulting the bank.

Mentionable, a Grameen Bank Inquiry Commission plan to recommend breaking up the Nobel-winning institution into at least 19 zones evoked strong criticism from anti-poverty campaigners and analysts.
