Gonoforum asks govt to postpone Jan 5 polls

It warns election to deepen political crisis

Gonoforum has urged the government to immediately postpone the next January 5 general election and hold a national dialogue involving all political parties as well as intellectuals and professionals to find a way to resolve the ongoing political crisis.

In a joint statement on Thursday, Gonoforum president Dr Kamal Hossain and general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu voiced grave concern over the next general election scheduled for January 5 (Sunday).

They said the upcoming parliamentary polls will deepen and lengthen the existing political crisis in the country. “The ongoing political conflict will push the suffocating political situation of hostility into grave uncertainty.”

The security of lives, property and jobs, as well as people’s struggle for survival will be at risk while the country’s education, trade and commerce, and economy will collapse due to political uncertainly, the statement said.
