Enforce Safe Food Act 2013: Activists

Green activists here on Monday stressed the need for effectively implementing the Safe Food Act 2013 to protect public health from the adverse impacts of chemical contaminated- and adulterated food items that have flooded the market.

Although the government has already enacted the Safe Food Act 2013 to ensure poison-free food, but there is no visible progress in enforcing the law, they told a press conference organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) at its office in the morning.

In his keynote paper, member secretary of Poba’s National Committee on Safe Food Dr Lenin said there are provisions in the Safe Food Act suggesting formation of the Bangladesh Safe Food Authority, the National Safe Food Management Advisory Committee, the Central Safe Food Management Coordination Committee and a technical committee, but these are yet to be formed.

He said now it is urgent to form these committees to effectively implement the law to protect the public health from poisonous food.

Poba chairman Abu Naser Khan, its executive general secretary Engr Abdus Sobhan and Poba secretary Manjur Hasan, among others, spoke at the press conference.
