Witnesses said Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council organised an iftar party at Woodburn Public Library auditorium where Nurul was supposed to speak as the chief guest.

In their apparent bid to foil the iftar party, around 40-50 BCL men, led by Govt Azizul Haque College unit general secretary Abdur Rauf, reportedly took position at the venue and asked for shutting down the programme, alleged convener of the district unit of the council Rakibul Hasan Rakib.

DUCSU VP Nurul and his companions reached the venue in a microbus around 5:00pm, he said, adding that as soon as they got down from the vehicle, the BCL activists swooped on them.

The attackers punched them and beat them with sticks, Rakib said.

They also beat the cameraperson of Jamuna Television Shahnewaz as he was taking footage of the attack, he added.

Of the injured, Nurul and several others were sent to Dhaka after providing primary treatment.

Rakib said they arranged the iftar party after taking permission from the local administration.

Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council joint convener Faruque Hasan said their several leaders and activists were injured in the attack. “Of them, Nurul’s injuries are severe,” he said, adding that they took primary treatment in Bogura but started for the capital in an ambulance fearing more attacks.
