The government is examining the proposals of some countries to invest in the proposed deep seaport at Sonadia Dwip, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan told Parliament on Tuesday.

Replying to a supplementary question of Shamsul Huq Chowdhury (AL-Chittagong), he said that the Prime Minister herself is looking after the matter related with the investment proposals from different countries.

The Minister said that the survey for setting up a deep seaport started during the 1996-2001 rule of the Awami League government. “We got the survey report when we came to power in 2009.”

He mentioned that after assuming the office in 2009, the Awami League government resumed the construction procedure and set up a cell in this connection.

Shajahan Khan mentioned that the government, in the cabinet meeting, approved the draft law in this regard to form an authority for the proposed deep seaport.

“The draft law is now in the Law Ministry for vetting and it will come to the Parliament for passage,” he said.
