Country on the verge of civil war: Ershad

Jatiya party chief ErshadDhaka, Mar 1 (UNB) – Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad on Friday said the current confrontational situation over the war crimes trial has brought the country to the verge of civil war.

“The entire nation has got divided centering the war crimes trial…a confrontational situation has created taking the country to the verge of civil war,” he said in a statement.

Ershad urged all to face the situation through a national unity in the transitional period of the country. “Especially, we’ll have to exercise restraint in using words in our movement and protests during the visit of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee,” he said.

The Indian President, in his first visit abroad since he assumed office as President of the neighbouring country last year, arrives here on a three-day visit on Sunday.

The JP Chairman said they surely want the trial of war criminals. “But the trial should be transparent, neutral and free from influence.”

He said the recent protest of the Shahbagh Square has made the situation more confrontational. “We’re not against the spirit of the youths. But I’m drawing attention to some of their demands which are making situation more complicated.”

Ershad urged the government to take more farsighted decision in handling the current situation. “I don’t support violence.’

The JP Chairman also said he and his party will not tolerate any activities that go against the Almighty Allah and the Prophet.
