Boy killed in Sylhet pre-polls violence

A boy was killed and at least fifteen people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League centering the upcoming upazila election at Osmani Nagar upazila in Sylhet today.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 17, of North Kalinagar in the area, a correspondent in Sylhet reports quoting police.

A clash was broke out between the supporters of AL nominated chairmen candidate Ataur Rahman and his rival Akhtaruzzaman Choudhury while both the groups were campaigning at Uttar Kalnichar area around 11:00am, said Abdul Awal Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar Police Station.

Both the groups attacked each other with sticks and threw brickbats, the OC said adding that at one stage the victim, a supporter of AL nominated candidate, died on the spot after being hit by brickbats.

The body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said the OC.

Meanwhile, supporters of the AL nominated candidate blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway for about two hours and later withdraw it after being assured of proper investigation and justice by the local administration.
