The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday thanked India for passing the Constitution amendment bill through its parliament, paving the way for implementing the much-talked-about Land Boundary Agreement with Bangladesh.
The party, however, said Bangladesh has lost around 500 acres of land following ratification of the LBA by the Indian parliament.
The Indian Lok Sabha ratified the LBA on Thursday.
BNP international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon, acting as the party’s spokesman, at a news briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office said ‘today (Thursday) is an important day in our national life as after a long time, the LBA bill was passed in the Indian parliament.’
He said the suffering of many people of the enclaves will be over and the inhabitants of the enclaves will get their identity. Bangladesh has lost around 500 acres of land through ratification of the agreement, he added.
Ripon said the inhabitants of the enclaves of the two regions who were deprived of their rights will get back their rights and enjoy state facilities.
On behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, he thanked the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh, former ruling Congress party president Sonia Gandhi and West Bengal chief minister Mamota Banerjee for passing the constitution amendment bill to operationalise the LBA.
He did not thank the incumbent government of Bangladesh to this end.
Ripon came down hard on the government for suspending Rajshahi city mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul.
He said status of minister and state ministers are being given to the ruling party-backed mayors
while the opposition-backed mayors are being placed on remand and sent to jail.
