BNP certifies 200 candidates

BNP-Gulshan+Office

Joint Secretary General Mohammad Shahjahan has been handing over the certificates at party chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office.

BNP leaders said mayor candidates of 200 municipalities had their certificates signed until Wednesday evening.

The candidates will contest the municipal polls with the party’s ‘paddy sheaf’ symbol.

Shahjahan, who is in charge of certifying the BNP candidates, told bdnews24.com that work on the candidature of ‘some’ aspirants was yet to be completed.

“I hope the work will be done by tonight,” he said.

The last day to submit nomination papers is Thursday.

While the BNP official stopped handing out certificates in the evening, hundreds of activists were seen in and around the office late in the evening.

Mahmudul Haque, who received his certificate to fight the polls from Narsinghdi’s Monohardi municipality, was assaulted by his rivals in front of the office in the afternoon.

BNP on Tuesday said it had started to hand out certificates to nominated candidates, but it did not make any list public.

After boycotting the last general election, BNP says it has taken the municipal election as a challenge.
