A new gas field was discovered on Saturday at Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj district, about 30-35 km off the capital city.

This has been the 26th gas field so far discovered in the country.

The new gas structure is located within the newly declared Purbachal Residential Model City, an under-construction satellite town in the city’s eastern direction, planned by Rajuk, the capital’s development authority.

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (Bapex), a subsidiary of the state-owned hydrocarbon corporation Petrobangla, has discovered the new gas field having a possible reserve of 50 billion cubic feet (bcf) of gas.

Petrobangla chairman Dr Hussain Monsur informed UNB over telephone that the gas was discovered in the field to an underground depth of 3332 metres.

He said the gas field could supply 10-15 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas per day to the national grid.

Dr Hussain Monsur said it would need to construct 4.5 km of pipeline to receive the gas from the field to the national distribution system. “We hope, we would be able to supply the gas to the national grid within a few months,” he said.

According to the Petrobangla chairman, Rupganj gas field has been the third discovery of gas during the last and current tenure of Awami League-led Grand Alliance government.
