Bank burglary: Tk16.19 crore recovered

Arrestees plans to loot the bank started two years ago, says RAB official

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has recovered the looted Tk16.19 crores from the possession of the two arrestees in connection with the Kishoreganj Sonali Bank burglary on Tuesday.

Col Ziaul Ahsan, additional director general (operation) of RAB, told the Dhaka Tribune.

RAB has arrested two persons including the prime accused with five sacks of money in the Kishoreganj Sonali Bank burglary in the capital’s Shyampur Balurmath area on Tuesday afternoon.

Habib alias Sohel and Motahar were arrested with the burgled money from Tonoy Vila, Col Ziaul Ahsan, said.

They were taken to RAB Head Quarters in the capital’s Uttara with the money.

After counting, Tk16,19,65,065 has been found in five sacks. Tk19 lakh was found missing out of burgled Tk16.4 crore.

Bank burglars Habib and Motahar rented a house in Shyampur Balurmath area three days before, the RAB official said.

However, they rented the house adjacent to the Sonali Bank of Kishoreganj

“They made plans to loot the bank two years ago and for this they rented the house adjacent to the Sonali Bank of Kishoreganj,” RAB official said.

On Monday, some 45 people, including 12 Sonali Bank officials, in Kishoreganj were held for interrogation in connection with a Tk16.4 crore looting incident.

Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Malek confirmed about the interrogation to the Dhaka Tribune.

Branch Manager Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan was amongst the detainees.

On the same day, Deputy General Manager Sheikh Amanuallah filed a case against some unidentified individuals in this connection with Sadar police station in the afternoon.

The authorities of Bangladesh Bank and Sonali Bank formed separate investigation committees to investigate into the incident where Tk16.4 crore was looted from a vault of a Sonali Bank Limited branch in Kishoreganj.

On Sunday, eight policemen were suspended following the incident. These policemen were deployed in the barrack located in the basement of the branch to maintain the security of the vault.
