Police’s prosecution wing presented the findings on Tuesday in a petition to grill suspected JMB member Bulbul Ahmed alias ‘Fuad’ in custody in a case started at Bakalia Police Station.

Metropolitan Magistrate Harun Or Rashid granted police five days to remand Fuad when the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) sought seven days, Court Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Nirmalendu Bikash Chakrabarty told reporters.

Court Police Inspector Shilpi Rani Debnath said Fuad was a high-ranking JMB operative.

Police have ‘information’ that from inside the jail, he had provided ‘information for covert killings’ to other members of the banned Islamist group outside jail, Debnath said.

“He had even given instruction for several killings from jail – we have gathered such information,” she said.

Police initiated the case against Fuad after recovering the body of an unidentified person at Bakalia on May 25 last year.

PBI Inspector Sheikh Mohammad Ehteshamul Islam is investigating the case.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Chakrabarty said, “We’ve heard that he (Fuad) had sent a note (chirkut) to his accomplices outside the jail. The detail will be known after investigation following the grilling.”

A PBI official, on condition of anonymity, told bdnews24.com they will also check whether Fuad was involved in the murder of decorated police officer Babul Aktar’s wife Mahmuda Aktar Mitu.

He said they wanted to know what was written on the note.

Police arrested Fuad, JMB military commander ‘Jabed’ and three others in a drive related to the investigation into the murders of three during a mugging incident at Majhighat in Sadarghat of the port city on Sep 23 last year.

Jabed died in a grenade explosion when he was taken out for an operation, police claimed.

Babul, then the additional deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch, had led the drive.

On June 5, his wife Mahmuda was shot and stabbed to death by three persons riding a motorcycle at the GEC intersection.

Police said they were prioritising involvement of the JMB in the investigation.

Detectives earlier said the JMB ‘avenged’ Jabed’s killing through the murder of a policeman at a checkpost in Dhaka’s Ashulia.
