The police escort death convicts to jail after a Dhaka court announced the verdict on Tuesday in connection with a sensational bank robbery at Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, that left at least eight people dead in 2015.

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced six people to death and another to life-term imprisonment in a case filed over a sensational bank robbery at Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, that left at least eight people dead in 2015.
Dhaka district and sessions judge SM Kuddus Zaman announced the verdict in presence of 10 accused. Another accused was still on the run.
The court handed down death sentences to the convicts saying they deserve capital punishment as they killed the people in a planned way and in cool-head. The court also fined each of them Tk 10,000.
The death convicts are Burhan Uddin, Saiful alias Al-Amin, Mintu Pradhan, Jasimuddin, Mahfuzul Islam Sumon, and Palash alias Sohel Rana. Palash went into hiding since the incident.
Ukil Hasan, one of the accused, was given life-term jail and fined Tk 5,000, or, he would serve more two-month imprisonment.
Two others — Abdul Baten and Shajahan Jamadar — were awarded three years’ jail. They were also fined Tk 3,000 each, in default, they have to serve one more month imprisonment.
The court acquitted Babul Sarder and Mozammel Haque of the charge as no allegation was proved against them.
On May 25, the court set the verdict schedule for today after completion of arguments from prosecution and defence sides.
A total of 64 prosecution witnesses out of 97 testified before the court.
The court framed charges against the 11 accused on January 21.
On December 6, 2015, investigation officer Dipak Kumar, officer-in-charge of Ashulia police station, had submitted charge sheet against them.
On April 21, a gang of armed robbers barged into a branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited and looted Tk 35 lakh killing eight people and injuring at least 25 others before shooting and bombing their way out at Kathgora in Ashulia industrial area. Locals chased and caught two of the robbers and beat them up. One of them died on the spot.
According to the charge sheet, 13 people were involved in the robbery and the killings. One of them was killed by mob while mastermind of the robbery Abdullah Al Baki, was killed in a shootout with the law enforcers in the capital’s Gabtali area after the incident.
