150 illegal structures near Karwan Bazar rail tracks demolished

Bangladesh Railway in a drive on Friday demolished around 150 illegal establishments on and along the rail tracks at Karwan Bazar in the city.

The sudden drive was conducted apparently in the wake of Thursday’s fatal train accident that killed four people in the area.

A team of Government Railway Police (GRP), led by Nurul Nabi Kabir, a divisional state officer of Bangladesh Railway and also a first-class magistrate, launched the drive at about 9am.

Rafiqul Islam, a sub-inspector of Kamalapur Railway Police Station, said the drive began from Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) level crossing and it ended in Tejgaon Railway Station area.

“It’s a regular eviction drive …it’ll continue,” the SI added.

Some 150 illegal structures were dismantled by bulldozer during the drive that continued till 1pm, he said.

SI Rafique, however, said shanties on both sides of the rail tracks remained out of the demolition drive due to an injunction issued by the High Court.

Four people, including a woman, were killed and five others injured as a train hit them after they jumped on a rail track to escape an impending hit by another train at Karwan Bazar on Thursday morning.
