‘Yunus should join BNP’

The Chittagong-1 MP offered this advice to the Nobel laureate, who also hails from the port city.

He took a dig at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for demanding a caretaker government.

“You said ‘none but the insane and a child are impartial’, and you are now lobbying for it with Yunus’ help,” Hossain said at a rally in Chittagong on Tuesday.

The Awami League-led government scrapped the provision for a caretaker administration through the 15th constitutional amendment. The election will be held under the ruling government, which the BNP claims, will not be ‘free and fair’.

Deposed Grameen Bank Managing Director Yunus recently voiced his support for the opposition’s demand for a polls-time non-party government. On Aug 22, he claimed no general election in Bangladesh, unless overseen by a non-party government, can be fair and credible.

On Monday, Yunus said Bangladesh would be at peace if the election was held under a caretaker administration and that he was ready to talk with the government if it sought his advice.

Castigating Yunus for his recent remarks, ruling MP Hossain said: “If Dr Yunus wants to join politics, he should join the BNP.

“Otherwise, he should keep quiet,” he said.
