Yunus hopeful of polls with participation of all

Our future can’t be decided by someone’s whim, he says

Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday said there is no doubt that the next general election is going to be held in due time and with the participation of all the political parties.

“I’ve come across queer concerns. It’s astonishing when people ask whether the election will be held or not. What kind of question is this? We want election – it must be held peacefully, and with the participation of all the parties. No one can deprive us of the election,” he said.

Prof Yunus was addressing a reception accorded to him by Muktijoddha Gano Parishad at the Institute of Diploma Engineers (IDEB).

The Noble Laureate further said the nation cannot get carried away in anyone’s whim over the election.

“The country is at a loss due to a divide. Why should we suffer a divide when we’ve fought the Liberation War united? We want a unity. We want to explore our potentials. We want peace. We don’t want to get lost in division and collision,” he said.

“We can’t let our future be decided by someone’s whim. Those who took the arms (during the Liberation War) can’t let it as such,” he added.

Dr Yunus said he has a firm conviction that the next generation will help overcome all the obstacles to the journey ahead and open up a new horizon for the nation.

It is the spirit of the Liberation War that guided the progress of the nation, he said, taking the arms in hands for freedom was the key to it.

Muktijoddha Gano Parishad president Ishtiaq Ali Ulfat presided over the function.
