Yunus can’t take control of Grameen Bank: Muhith

It’ll remain under govt control, he says

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday said that how much Dr Muhammad Yunus shouts, he won’t be able to take control of Grameen Bank again and it will remain under government control.

“It’s a statutory body created by the government and the government’s 25 percent share will continue to be with the Gameen Bank… this is the final decision,” he said.

Muhith made the remarks when his reaction was sought about a move by the US senators and congressmen to make a statement on the Bangladesh government’s steps regarding the Grameen Bank founded by Nobel Laureate Yunus.

His remarks came after two consecutive meetings of the Cabinet Economic Affairs Committee and the Cabinet Purchase Committee which he chaired at the Cabinet Division. Senior Ministers attended the meetings.

The Finance Minister mentioned that the government has been looking for appointing a new chairman at the Grameen Bank and the present chairman of the bank will continue until a new chairman takes over.

He raised question about Dr Yunus’ recent movement on Grameen Bank and said that the government has cleared its stance on the bank.

The government has formed a commission to scrutinise the activities of the Grameen Bank which will submit its final report shortly. The commission has already made some recommendations on whose basis the government is taking some measures.

Muhith reiterated the government’s decision to amend the law regarding the election of directors at the Grameen Bank. He also informed that amendments will be brought to the rules of the Grameen Bank to enable the micro-finance bank function through decentralising its branches.
